| Here is a full description of the ‘Broadband
for Life - Home User’ video.
SCENE 1
Images of website pages and TV programmes flash on
the screen in rapid succession as if being flicked through using
a television remote control.
Male game show host appears in a cheap suit with extra
white teeth. He turns to face the camera and announces as if to
a large studio audience
‘Let's play...the life changer!’
Reading from a game show cue card he holds in front
of him.
‘Ok, here it is...Broadband, what would you
do with it?’
Cuts to new scene.
SCENE 2
Retired woman standing among beautiful plants and
trees in a beautiful old conservatory with soft evening sunlight
streaming in through the glass panels. She is dressed in her gardening
clothes, complete with hat and apron.
‘Broadband is brilliant!’ she states with
obvious pleasure.
Bringing both hands up to her chest she pulls up a
number of floating animated images and starts to touch and move
individual pictures around as they float in front of her in a virtual
environment.
Voice over while she manipulates the images:
‘I can get my hands on loads of garden designs on my computer,
search for rare plants, and send pictures of my prize winning begonias
to all my friends, in a flash.’
She selects a final picture of her prize begonia and
pushes it on its way by tapping the side of the image with her hand.
Picture of her begonia disappears off the right hand side of the
screen.
Film cuts to interior scene with gardening woman’s
friend. Another retired woman in a beige cardigan sat at her computer
when the prize begonia image appears on screen. She leans forward
to peer at the image, grimaces and glances across at her very poorly
looking begonia which is sat next to the monitor in a ceramic pot,
looking wilted and worse for wear.
Cuts to new scene.
SCENE 3
Teenage boy sat at the foot of his bed, wooden flooring,
modern blind on the window and his state of the art gaming computer
as the centrepiece. The lights are dim and the computer screen glows
in the half darkness.
The boy interlocks his fingers and stretches them,
as if he is warming up. The camera pans across the three clocks
he has on the wall showing the current time in Los Angeles, Bethesda
and Tokyo. The boy takes a slow sideways glance at the clocks. The
minute hand on the clocks knocks on to the next minute.
The computer screen in the corner of the room lights
up, a wry smile of acknowledgement appears on the boys face. On
the computer screen a number of icons appear representing different
game players from around the world who are joining the group. As
each new icon appears, you can hear talking in their native language.
The boy strolls from the bed to his PC, sits down
with his legs crossed and slowly picks up his control pad and prepares
to play.
Cuts to new scene.
SCENE 4
Male 30/40 something science teacher in woollen tank
top, white lab coat and thick rimmed spectacles is scribbling formulae
on a blackboard with his back to the camera. He is in a wood panelled
room with various scientific paraphernalia scattered around the
room.
As he speaks he turns and walks towards a large table
covered with elaborate apparatus. Test tubes are bubbling with coloured
liquids, Bunsen burners are flaming wildly.
Science teacher speaks ‘It’s about accessing
a world of knowledge, it's about researching and understanding all
that you may wish to. And with that knowledge, comes…’
He instantly metamorphosis’s into a mad scientist,
the background goes completely dark as he flings his arms in the
air and roars the word
‘POWER!’
Across his body and the dark background, algebraic
formulae are calculating.
‘Power to learn, power to understand, power
to CREATE!’ he shouts manically.
Switches back to the normal science teacher and says
‘Whatever...’
Switches back to mad scientist cackling like a maniac,
stood over a body on the table covered in cloth and chained down,
twitching and wriggling.
‘Your mind desires’ he says mysteriously
as the normal scientist.
Cuts to new scene.
SCENE 5
A peaceful candlelit dinner between a young couple
in the privacy of a modern home with some classical background music.
The young woman dressed in a black evening dress, rises and removes
their plates from the red tablecloth. As she enters the kitchen
she turns and offers a gentle smile to the man, sat at the table
who smiles and nods back humbly.
She closes the door behind her and enters the kitchen.
It looks like a bombsite, pans are boiling over on the cooker top
and the sides are covered in debris from her failed cooking attempts.
Obviously panicked, she throws the plates she is holding into the
bin before swiftly reaching over to a laptop on the worktop. She
lifts the screen up to show her mother onscreen live via a web cam.
She reaches over to the top of the fridge to her web cam and points
it at the hob, before screaming at the laptop in some distress
‘Mum!’
The mother replies calmly
‘Ok, ok, ok we’ll sort this out now, we’ll
sort this out now’
Screen cuts back to the peaceful dining room where
the man lifts a lid on a ceramic dish to reveal the butter, to his
delight. Back in the chaotic kitchen, the woman pours a large amount
of flour into a pan on the hob. The mother clutches her hair and
yells
‘No! too much.’
‘Well how much then?’ The woman snaps
frantically
‘Just a spoon full’ Replies the mother
Telephone rings in the kitchen, the woman picks up
and quickly says in a harassed tone.
‘Not now.’
As the young woman rattles around in the kitchen,
the mother looks on nervously and the boyfriend in the dining room
listens curiously to the strange sounds coming from behind the kitchen
door
Finally the girl emerges from the kitchen with a sigh
of relief, a smile and 2 plates of food, albeit with flour on her
dress and her face. As she sits down she places the plates on the
table. From the laptop in the kitchen they can hear her mother shouting
‘Jen, Jen, the oven!’
A large bang from the kitchen before a puff of smoke
seeps in round the doorway and a pan clangs on the floor.
The boyfriend gives a surprised look as the girlfriend
bites her lip, trying to ignore the situation and starts to eat
her food.
